Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament

The Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament (東レ パン・パシフィック・オープン・テニストーナメント?) is a WTA Tour affiliated professional tennis tournament for women, held every year since 1984 in Tokyo, Japan. It is classified on the WTA Tour as a Tier I tournament since 1993. The event has traditionally been played on indoor carpet at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, but the 2008 event took place from September 15–21 on outdoor hard courts at the Ariake Coliseum. Martina Hingis holds the record for most singles wins with five. Toray Industries sponsors this Tournament.

The 2013 tournament will be the last edition of this tournament, with an event in Wuhan, China to act as its replacement from 2014 onwards.

Famous quotes containing the words pan, pacific, open and/or tennis:

I can’t accept “our nervous age,” since mankind has been nervous during every age. Whoever fears nervousness should turn into a sturgeon or smelt; if a sturgeon makes a stupid mistake, it can only be one: to end up on a hook, and then in a pan in a pastry shell.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

The doctor of Geneva stamped the sand
That lay impounding the Pacific swell,
Patted his stove-pipe hat and tugged his shawl.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

Observe decorum, and it will open a path to morality.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

Like Olympic medals and tennis trophies, all they signified was that the owner had done something of no benefit to anyone more capably than everyone else.
    Joseph Heller (b. 1923)
