It is classified on the WTA Tour as a Tier I tournament since 1993. The 2013 tournament will be the last edition of this tournament, with an event in Wuhan, China to act as its replacement from 2014 onwards.

—For the City of New Orleans, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

American future lies in the East. The great free markets of the Pacific Rim are the American destiny.
Donald Freed, U.S. screenwriter, and Arnold M. Stone. Robert Altman. Richard Nixon (Philip Baker Hall)

Luxury, then is a way of
    being ignorant, comfortably
An approach to the open market
    of least information.
    Imamu Amiri Baraka (b. 1934)

I know some of my self-worth comes from tennis, and it’s hard to think of doing something else where you know you’ll never be the best. Tennis players are rare creatures: where else in the world can you know that you’re the best? The definitiveness of it is the beauty of it, but it’s not all there is to life and I’m ready to explore the alternatives.
    Martina Navratilova (b. 1956)
