Tom Kettle - Family

Family

On 8 September 1909, Kettle married Mary Sheehy (born 1884), a fellow graduate of the Royal University, a suffragist, and like Kettle a member of a well known nationalist family (her father, David Sheehy, was a nationalist MP). Their daughter Elisabeth (Betty) was born in 1913.

Through his wife Mary's sisters he was connected by marriage to Francis Skeffington and Frank Cruise O'Brien, father of the Labour TD and Irish government minister, later UK Unionist Party politician, Conor Cruise O'Brien. Father Eugene Sheehy, a brother of David Sheehy, was the priest who educated Éamon de Valera in Limerick.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

Welcome to the great American two-career family and pass the aspirin please.
    Anastasia Toufexis (20th century)

A poem is like a person. Though it has a family tree, it is important not because of its ancestors but because of its individuality. The poem, like any human being, is something more than its most complete analysis. Like any human being, it gives a sense of unified individuality which no summary of its qualities can reproduce; and at the same time a sense of variety which is beyond satisfactory final analysis.
    Donald Stauffer (b. 1930)

Of all the vices, lewdness is the worst; of all the virtues, family duty is the first.
    —Chinese proverb.

    Rhyme.
