Fletcher was born in Harrow, London, to a working-class family. His father Bob Fletcher, who worked at Kodak and played in local bands, and mother Debbie Fletcher, a special needs teacher, encouraged and supported his love of music from a young age. He has a younger sister, Carrie Hope Fletcher. When he was 10, Fletcher starred as the main role in Oliver! at the London Palladium alongside Jim Dale as Fagin. Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“We do not preach great things but we live them.”

“O, reason not the need! Our basest beggars
Are in the poorest thing superfluous.
Allow not nature more than nature needs,
Mans life is cheap as beasts. Thou art a lady;
If only to go warm were gorgeous,
Why, nature needs not what thou gorgeous wearst,
Which scarcely keeps thee warm. But, for true need
You heavens, give me that patience, patience I need!”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
