Tokyo City

Tokyo City (東京市, Tōkyō-shi?) was a municipality in Japan and part of Tokyo-fu which existed from May 1, 1889 until its merger with its prefecture on July 1, 1943. The historical boundaries of Tokyo City are now occupied by independent special wards. The new merged government became known as Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolis, or ambiguously Tokyo prefecture.

Famous quotes containing the words tokyo and/or city:

Eclecticism is the degree zero of contemporary general culture: one listens to reggae, watches a western, eats McDonald’s food for lunch and local cuisine for dinner, wears Paris perfume in Tokyo and “retro” clothes in Hong Kong; knowledge is a matter for TV games. It is easy to find a public for eclectic works.
    Jean François Lyotard (b. 1924)

In this absence of nine years I find a great improvement in the city of New York.... Some say it has improved because I have been away. Others, and I agree with them, say it has improved because I have come back.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
