1981

  • January 19 (27th of Dey): Algiers Accords, between Iran and the United States, mediated by Algeria, to resolve an Iran hostage crisis. In exchange for the release of the hostages by Iran, the United States agreed to unfreeze Iranian assets.
  • January 20 (28th of Dey), on the day Ronald Reagan is inaugurated as president of the USA: The hostages in the US embassy were released, after 444 days, USA conceded to transfer money, as well as export military equipment to Iran.
  • June 21 (31st of Khordad): Abolhassan Banisadr, first president of Islamic republic, was impeached by the parliament .
  • June 22 (1st of Tir): Abolhassan Banisadr was dismissed by Supreme Leader, Khomeini.
  • June 28 (7th of Tir): Explosion of the office of Islamic Republic Party by MEK which resulted in killing of 72 high-ranking officials and representatives including Mohammad Beheshti the secretary-general of the party and head of Judicial system of Iran.
  • July 24 (2nd of Mordad): Presidential election took place and Mohammad-Ali Rajai chosen as president.
  • August 30 (8th of Shahrivar): President Rajai and his prime minister (Bahonar) were killed in a bombing incident.
  • September 2 (11th of Shahrivar): parliament voted in favour of Mohammad Reza Mahdavi-Kani as the prime minister of The Interim government of the Islamic Republic, to hold next presidential election and govern country until then.
  • September 21 (30th of Shahrivar): The Interim government of the Islamic Republic was established after assassination of Mohammad Ali Rajai and Mohammad Javad Bahonar.
  • September 27 to September 29(5th to 7th of Mehr): Operation Samen-ol-A'emeh; Breaking the siege of Abadan which was the turning point in Iran–Iraq War.
  • October 2 (10th of Mehr): Presidential election took place and Ali Khamenei chosen as president.
  • October 13 (21st of Mehr): Ali Khamenei officially became president.
  • October 29 (7th of Aban): parliament voted in favour of Mir-Hossein Mousavi as the prime minister and the new government replaced Interim Government.
