Tim Mc Manus - Character Overview

Character Overview

Tim McManus is the unit manager of Emerald City, an experimental cell block at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, or "Oz". Unlike the other staff members at Oz, McManus has a college education, has never served as a corrections officer, and regards the inmates as people. Throughout the series, McManus believes that he can rehabilitate the inmates and turn them into better citizens. He faces varying degrees of opposition from the inmate population, the prison administration, and the office of Governor James Devlin.

McManus exhibits many different personality traits, both positive and negative. McManus believes in justice, morality, the goodness of people, and is persistent to the point where his idealism can work; however, McManus is also over-zealous, egotistical, overly idealistic, naive, and self-righteous. McManus strives to make Emerald City an ideal prison environment, where people of all groups learn to live together and improve themselves.

Famous quotes containing the word character:

His character as one of the fathers of the English language would alone make his works important, even those which have little poetical merit. He was as simple as Wordsworth in preferring his homely but vigorous Saxon tongue, when it was neglected by the court, and had not yet attained to the dignity of a literature, and rendered a similar service to his country to that which Dante rendered to Italy.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
