Design
The design was based on the Spruance class. The Ticonderoga class introduced a new generation of guided missile platforms based on the Aegis phased array radar able to simultaneously scan for threats, track targets, and guide missiles to intercept. When they were designed, they had the most powerful electronic warfare equipment in the Navy, as well as the most advanced underwater surveillance system. It was one of the first Navy classes to be built in modules, rather than being assembled from the bottom up.
Operations research was used to study manpower requirements on the Ticonderoga class. It was found that 4 officers and 44 enlisted men could be removed from the ships complement by removing traditional posts that had been made obsolete.

Famous quotes containing the word design:
“I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder, as the opening of a grand scene and design in providence, for the illumination of the ignorant and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the earth.”
—John Adams (17351826)
“With wonderful art he grinds into paint for his picture all his moods and experiences, so that all his forces may be brought to the encounter. Apparently writing without a particular design or responsibility, setting down his soliloquies from time to time, taking advantage of all his humors, when at length the hour comes to declare himself, he puts down in plain English, without quotation marks, what he, Thomas Carlyle, is ready to defend in the face of the world.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Nowadays the host does not admit you to his hearth, but has got the mason to build one for yourself somewhere in his alley, and hospitality is the art of keeping you at the greatest distance. There is as much secrecy about the cooking as if he had a design to poison you.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
