The cover art is a painting by Scottish artist Peter Howson titled Sisters of Mercy. On September 23, 2005 it was sold for $186,000 by Christie's in New York. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 243 x 182 centimeters. It has been suggested that the painting explores the themes of betrayal, revenge and fear and that it shows a group of prostitutes urging a man holding a bible to throw himself off a cliff.

Famous quotes containing the words cover and/or art:
“Again we have here two distinctions that are no distinctions, but made to seem so by terms invented by I know not whom to cover ignorance, and blind the understanding of the reader: for it cannot be conceived that there is any liberty greater, than for a man to do what he will.”
—Thomas Hobbes (15791688)
“Now I want
Spirits to enforce, art to enchant,
And my ending is despair,
Unless I be relieved by prayer,
Which pierces so that it assaults
Mercy itself, and frees all faults.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
