The Three Links or Three Linkages (Chinese: 三通; Pinyin: sān tōng) was a "message to Compatriots in Taiwan" calling for the unification of China and Taiwan. It was sent by the PRC National People's Congress in 1979.
The three links include direct postal (通郵/通邮 tōng yóu), transportation (especially airline) (通航 tōng háng), and trade (通商 tōng shāng) links between China and Taiwan. Communication between the two sides were routed through intermediate destinations, primarily Hong Kong; Macau; Jeju, South Korea and Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The "Three Links" were officially restored on 15 December 2008, with the commencement of direct flights, shipping and post.

Famous quotes containing the word links:
“An alliance is like a chain. It is not made stronger by adding weak links to it. A great power like the United States gains no advantage and it loses prestige by offering, indeed peddling, its alliances to all and sundry. An alliance should be hard diplomatic currency, valuable and hard to get, and not inflationary paper from the mimeograph machine in the State Department.”
—Walter Lippmann (18891974)
