Phase Converters
Phase converters are utilized when three phase equipment needs to be operated on single phase power source. They're utilized by customers when three phase power is not available or cost is not justifiable, such as as residential or farm properties. Such converters may also allow the frequency to be varied (resynthesis) allowing speed control. Some railway locomotives are moving to multi-phase motors driven by such systems even though the incoming supply to a locomotive is nearly always either DC or single-phase AC.
