Thorntons - J.W. Thornton Ltd

J.W. Thornton Ltd

Joseph William became ill in 1917 and eventually died in 1919. Norman, just 21 years old, took over the business. Norman worked very hard during the war trying to consolidate trade in the two shops. In 1921 Stanley and Norman formed a limited company called J.W. Thornton Ltd with themselves as the two shareholders. Here were two good partners working together, establishing a secure prospect for the future growth of the family business.

In 1923 economic conditions started to improve and the Thornton brothers decided to open two more shops. The first of these was on London Road just where it joined the end of The Moor, and the second was at nearby 194 Rockingham Street, both being very busy locations. This doubling of outlets meant a doubling of stock for which the new London Road shop had production space.
