Third Battle of Mount Hermon

The Third Battle of Mount Hermon was fought on the night of October 21–22, 1973, between the Israeli Army and the Syrian Army over Mount Hermon, during the last days of the Yom Kippur War. Syrian troops had captured the IDF outpost on the mountain on October 6, and held it for two weeks. In the third battle, codenamed Operation Dessert (Hebrew: מבצע קינוח‎, Mivtza Kinu'ah), Israeli troops captured the Israeli outpost and the Syrian one.

Famous quotes containing the words battle and/or mount:

Above the bayonets, mixed and crossed,
Men saw a gray, gigantic ghost
    Receding through the battle cloud,
And heard across the tempest loud
The death cry of a nation lost!
    Will Henry Thompson (1848–1918)

On the 31st of August, 1846, I left Concord in Massachusetts for Bangor and the backwoods of Maine,... I proposed to make excursions to Mount Ktaadn, the second highest mountain in New England, about thirty miles distant, and to some of the lakes of the Penobscot, either alone or with such company as I might pick up there.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
