The Witches (book) - Film Version

Film Version

The book has been adapted into a film by director Nicolas Roeg starring Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson, released in 1990 (the year both Roald Dahl and Jim Henson died) and distributed by Warner Bros. the film the boy is named Lucas (but mainly called "Luke") Eveshim, the grandmother Helga Eveshim, and The Grand High Witch Evangeline Ernst. The most notable difference from the book is that the boy is restored to human form at the end of the story by the Grand High Witch's assistant (a character who doesn't appear in the book) who had renounced her former evil. This was an ending that Dahl himself hated.

Famous quotes containing the words film and/or version:

Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.
    Ingmar Bergman (b. 1918)

Truth cannot be defined or tested by agreement with ‘the world’; for not only do truths differ for different worlds but the nature of agreement between a world apart from it is notoriously nebulous. Rather—speaking loosely and without trying to answer either Pilate’s question or Tarski’s—a version is to be taken to be true when it offends no unyielding beliefs and none of its own precepts.
    Nelson Goodman (b. 1906)
