According to the 2011 Census of Population, there were 9,783 residents in Balmain. 63.5% of residents were born in Australia. The most common other countries of birth were England 9.6%, New Zealand 3.6% and Ireland 1.6%. 82.9% of residents spoke only English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Italian 1.2%, Greek 1.0% and German 0.8%. The most common responses for religious affiliation were No Religion 34.6% Catholic 24.0% and Anglican 16.5%.
