Coppola decided to cast Damon as Rudy Baylor after he saw his dedication to acting during the filming of Courage Under Fire, for which he lost several pounds to portray the character Illario.
Damon has stated in interviews that he worked as a bartender in Knoxville to perfect his southern dialect before production as preparation for his lead role. Later he hired one of the customers to serve as his dialect coach.
