The Penguin Book of Contemporary British Poetry

The Penguin Book of Contemporary British Poetry was a poetry anthology edited by Blake Morrison and Andrew Motion, and published in 1982 by Penguin Books.

The traditional claims made—and recognised as such in the introduction—about a new British poetry generation taking over the "mainstream", were greeted in this case by more than the usual controversy. Poets in the 1962 Al Alvarez anthology, The New Poetry, were excluded. The inclusion of Irish poet Seamus Heaney led to him warning - "Be advised, my passport's green/ No glass of ours was ever raised/ To toast the Queen"

Poets included in the book were:

Fleur Adcock - Douglas Dunn - James Fenton - Tony Harrison - Seamus Heaney - Michael Longley - Derek Mahon - Medbh McGuckian - Paul Muldoon - Tom Paulin - Craig Raine - Christopher Reid - Carol Rumens - Peter Scupham - Penelope Shuttle - Anne Stevenson - David Sweetman - Jeffrey Wainwright - Hugo Williams

Famous quotes containing the words penguin, book, contemporary, british and/or poetry:

Rearing three children is like growing a cactus, a gardenia, and a tubful of impatiens. Each needs varying amounts of water, sunlight and pruning. Were I to be absolutely fair, I would have to treat each child as if he or she were absolutely identical to the other siblings, and there would be no profit for anyone in that.
Phyllis Theroux, U.S. journalist. “On Being Fair,” Night Lights: Bedtime Stories for Parents in the Dark, Penguin (1987)

The whole book by noble gestures and inclinations renders many words unnecessary.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The shift from the perception of the child as innocent to the perception of the child as competent has greatly increased the demands on contemporary children for maturity, for participating in competitive sports, for early academic achievement, and for protecting themselves against adults who might do them harm. While children might be able to cope with any one of those demands taken singly, taken together they often exceed children’s adaptive capacity.
    David Elkind (20th century)

Never forget that you are Germans. Never forget that you are Nazis!
Edmund H. North, British screenwriter, and Lewis Gilbert. Admiral Lutjens (Karel Stepanek)

There is no longer beauty except in the struggle. No more masterpieces without an aggressive character. Poetry must be a violent assault against the unknown forces in order to overcome them and prostrate them before men.
    Tommaso Marinetti (1876–1944)
