Philosophic Subtext
The pearl is symbolic of all the power to deceive, to corrupt, and to destroy. The pearl also brings out the greed of men. But it does bring hope, promise to comfort, and security to Kino's family. The pearl is not truly evil, but it is corrupted by the desires of all who lust for it.
