The Park School of Buffalo is a private, co-educational, college preparatory school located in Amherst, New York (north of Buffalo). Founded in 1912, the institution features lower, middle, and upper schools, serving roughly 260 students from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. .
Faculty of the non-sectarian, co-educational school say they base their educational philosophy on that of John Dewey, with an individualized approach to teaching based on a progressive model. The school endorses the slogan "active learning for life" as an appropriate delineation of this approach. The school's mission statement consists of six goals: "to learn how to learn and enjoy learning, to engage creatively in the discipline of learning, to experience success and to risk failure, to practice freedom with responsibility, to transform challenge into opportunity, to be curious, to explore and to discover".
The school prides itself on its capacity to develop positive and meaningful student-teacher relationships built on respect, trust, and academic integrity. It is not uncommon for a faculty member to leave his or her classroom during an exam. Classes at the Park School are primarily discussion-oriented, especially in the social sciences, fostering a sense of open and active learning akin to that developed under the Harkness table method of Phillips Exeter Academy.
The Buffalo Rapids of the ABA played home games at the school from November 2005 to February 2006..
