Theodore Sturgeon, reviewing Lathe for The New York Times, found it to be "a very good book," praising Le Guin for 'produc a rare and powerful synthesis of poetry and science, reason and emotion." Lester del Rey, however, faulted the novel for an arbitrary and ineffective second half, saying "with wonder piled on wonder, the plot simply loses credibility."
