In the audio commentary on the Special Edition DVD release of the movie adaptation, Frederick Forsyth claims that after the Cold War, one of his contacts in Moscow, a former KGB officer, told him that at the time the book was released the KGB examined the plot of the novel to see if such an operation were technically possible but came to the conclusion that it was not.
