Fellowship Involvement in Extra-marital Affairs of Politician Members

In 2009, the Fellowship received media attention in connection with three Republicans politician members who reportedly engaged in extra-marital affairs. Two of them, Senator John Ensign, chairman of the Republican Policy Committee in the Senate and the fourth ranking in his party’s Senate leadership, and South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, immediate past Chair of the Republican Governors Association and U.S. Representative from 1995 to 2001, were considering running for President in 2012. Famous quotes containing the words fellowship, involvement, affairs, politician and/or members:

    Have no fellowship with one that is mightier and richer than thyself: for how agree the kettle and the earthen pot together? For if the one be smitten against the other, it shall be broken.
    Apocrypha. Ecclesiasticus 13:2.

    I recommend limiting one’s involvement in other people’s lives to a pleasantly scant minimum. This may seem too stoical a position in these madly passionate times, but madly passionate people rarely make good on their madly passionate promises.
    Quentin Crisp (b. 1908)

    These things do not happen by chance. There is much less luck in public affairs than some suppose.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

    It must have looked as if the course
    He steered was really straight away
    From that which he was headed for
    Not much concerned for them, I say;
    No more so than became a man
    And politician at odd seasons.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

    Two myths must be shattered: that of the evil stepparent . . . and the myth of instant love, which places unrealistic demands on all members of the blended family. . . . Between the two opposing myths lies reality. The recognition of reality is, I believe, the most important step toward the building of a successful second family.
    Claire Berman (20th century)
