Release
The album was originally released as an LP on September 22, 1969. After a number of reissues on cassette tape and CD, it was remastered and rereleased in a process overseen by Robbie Robertson in 2000. The 2000 re-release has also been packaged as a double CD with The Band's debut album Music from Big Pink.
The album was also reissued in 2009 by Audio Fidelity as a limited edition gold CD. Remastered from a 1980's CD pressing, the album also included a single b-side "Get Up Jake" as a bonus track. Originally slated for the album "Get Up Jake" was dropped from the original album line-up at the last minute because the band felt it was too similar to another track on the album.

Famous quotes containing the word release:
“The shallow consider liberty a release from all law, from every constraint. The wise man sees in it, on the contrary, the potent Law of Laws.”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
“If I were to be taken hostage, I would not plead for release nor would I want my government to be blackmailed. I think certain government officials, industrialists and celebrated persons should make it clear they are prepared to be sacrificed if taken hostage. If that were done, what gain would there be for terrorists in taking hostages?”
—Margaret Mead (19011978)
“The near touch of death may be a release into life; if only it will break the egoistic will, and release that other flow.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
