The Accused (1988 Film) - Critical and Scholarly Reaction

Critical and Scholarly Reaction

The film was a critical success, garnering a 95% fresh rating in review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Of the two trials in the film, Roger Ebert finds that the lesson of the "second trial may be the most important message this movie has to offer, " that "for some men, the movie will reveal a truth that most women already know, " of the damage caused by verbal sexual harassment.

Some educators worry that this "educationally profitable" film's R rating "will receive V ratings and be subject to at least a presumption against curricular use in many public schools. "

The film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival.

Famous quotes containing the words critical, scholarly and/or reaction:

An art whose medium is language will always show a high degree of critical creativeness, for speech is itself a critique of life: it names, it characterizes, it passes judgment, in that it creates.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)

... ideals, standards, aspirations,—those are chameleon words, and take color from their speakers,—often false tints. A scholarly man of my acquaintance once told me that he traveled a thousand miles into the desert to get away from the word uplift, and it was the first word he heard after he reached his destination.
    Carolyn Wells (1862–1942)

In contrast to revenge, which is the natural, automatic reaction to transgression and which, because of the irreversibility of the action process can be expected and even calculated, the act of forgiving can never be predicted; it is the only reaction that acts in an unexpected way and thus retains, though being a reaction, something of the original character of action.
    Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)
