Telephone Numbers in Norway - Emergency Numbers

Emergency Numbers

Historically, the local operator would take emergency calls and forward them to the police, fire or local doctor. In 1964, the emergency number 000 was gradually introduced. In 1985, a modernized emergency service was started at Haukeland hospital in Bergen for Hordaland. In 1986, the emergency number diverted to 001 for fire, 002 for police and 003 for health emergencies. These numbers changed to 110, 112 and 113 in 1994, when the international access code changed from 095 to 00.

Famous quotes containing the words emergency and/or numbers:

War-making is one of the few activities that people are not supposed to view “realistically”; that is, with an eye to expense and practical outcome. In all-out war, expenditure is all-out, unprudent—war being defined as an emergency in which no sacrifice is excessive.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)

Publishers are notoriously slothful about numbers, unless they’re attached to dollar signs—unlike journalists, quarterbacks, and felony criminal defendents who tend to be keenly aware of numbers at all times.
    Hunter S. Thompson (b. 1939)
