There are an estimated 40,000 internet users in Niger (2006), and 216 (1999) Internet service hosts: ISPs and other direct connections to the internet. The Top level domain is .ne, and its assignment is controlled by the parastatal telecom company, SONITEL. The UN estimated in 2006 that there were only .3 internet users per 100 Nigeriens, but this had risen from less than .1 per 100 in 2000. As a point of reference, the Millennium Development Goal for least developed countries by 2015 is 8.16 Internet users per 100 population.
