Switzerland at The 2004 Summer Olympics - Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball

Both Swiss men's pairs managed to qualify for the knockout round, and both had their tournament ended by the eventual gold medalists from Brazil. The Laciga brothers edged past one Brazilian team in the round of 16, but Ricardo and Emanuel handled them easily in the quarterfinals. Kobel and Heuscher gave the Brazilians a much sterner test in the semifinals, winning the second set and coming within three points of winning the third and final set as well. The Swiss then faced a rematch of a pool game in the bronze medal match, against an Australian team. The pool play match had been a close one, with the Swiss coming from behind to win in three sets, and the bronze medal match was similar, as the Australians opened up a lead, only to have Kobel and Heuscher win the last two sets and the medal. This was the first Olympic medal for the Swiss in volleyball.

From the beach the child holding the hand of her father,
Those burial clouds that lower victorious soon to devour all,
    Watching, silently weeps.
