Swiss Federal Railways - Clock

Clock

For more details on this topic, see Swiss railway clock.

The Swiss Federal Railways clock designed by Hans Hilfiker has become a national icon. It is special in that it stops for just over a second at the end of each minute, to wait for a signal from the master clock which sets it going again — thus keeping all station clocks synchronized.

On September 20, 2012, Swiss and world media reported that the design of this clock had been copied without prior permission by Apple Inc. and used in the iOS 6 clock application on Apple devices. On October 12, 2012, SBB published a statement saying that the two companies had come to an agreement, resulting in Apple Inc. licensing the clock's design, without giving further detail.

Famous quotes containing the word clock:

    They’ll take suggestion as a cat laps milk;
    They’ll tell the clock to any business that
    We say befits the hour.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    The clock runs down
    timeless and still.
    The days and nights turn hours to years
    and water in a gutter marks the circle of another world
    hating, resentful, and afraid
    stagnant, and green, and full of slimy things.
    Margaret Abigail Walker (b. 1915)

    “Pop” Wyman ruled here with a firm but gentle hand; no drunken man was ever served at the bar; no married man was allowed to play at the tables; across the face of the large clock was written “Please Don’t Swear,” and over the orchestra appeared the gentle admonition, “Don’t Shoot the Pianist—He’s Doing His Damndest.”
