Famous quotes containing the words space, race and/or competition:

There is commonly sufficient space about us. Our horizon is never quite at our elbows.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Ah, little road, brown as my race is brown,
Your trodden beauty like our trodden pride,
Dust of the dust, they must not bruise you down.
Rise to one brimming golden, spilling cry!
    Helene Johnson (b. 1907)

Sisters define their rivalry in terms of competition for the gold cup of parental love. It is never perceived as a cup which runneth over, rather a finite vessel from which the more one sister drinks, the less is left for the others.
    Elizabeth Fishel (20th century)
