The vagus presents a well-marked ganglionic enlargement, which is called the superior ganglion of the vagus nerve. It contains afferent somatosensory neuronal cell bodies that provide sensory information from the external auditory meatus (auricular branch), cranial meninges (meningeal branch), and the external surface of the tympanic membrane. Their central fibers synapse in the sensory trigeminal nucleus.
It is a grayish color, spherical in form, and about 4 mm. in diameter.
Famous quotes containing the words superior and/or nerve:
“I still lack to a considerable degree that naturally superior kind of manner that I would dearly like to possess.”
—Heinrich Himmler (19001945)
“Tom: All right, boys. Cmon. Why dont you say Im a yellow belly and a big mouth at that?
Shep: You yellow? Who thinks youre yellow? Did you hear what he said? A guy whos got the nerve to marry? Thats more than Flash Gordon ever did.”
—Billy Wilder (b. 1906)
