Sunset Beach is a beach located near Cape May Point, along the Delaware Bay, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is a local tourist attraction, in part due to its proximity to the SS Atlantus (locally known as the "Concrete Ship") and the Cape May Light. It is also famous for its beautiful sunsets, and a flag raising-lowering ceremony happening during that period. The Flag ceremony takes places every morning and evening from May through September. All the flags flown in the ceremony are flags from the caskets of veterans. The ceremony has been taking place on Sunset beach since 1973. Other attractions include "Cape May diamonds", clear quartz crystals that can be easily found along the beach's length; several shops; a grill; and summer fireworks.
Famous quotes containing the words sunset and/or beach:
“Would you sell the colors of your sunset and the fragrance
Of your flowers, and the passionate wonder of your forest
For a creed that will not let you dance?”
—Helene Johnson (b. 1907)
“They will tell you tough stories of sharks all over the Cape, which I do not presume to doubt utterly, how they will sometimes upset a boat, or tear it in pieces, to get at the man in it. I can easily believe in the undertow, but I have no doubt that one shark in a dozen years is enough to keep up the reputation of a beach a hundred miles long.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
