Sunpu Domain

Sunpu Domain (駿府藩, Sunpu-han?), also known as Shizuoka Domain (静岡藩?), was a Japanese domain of the Edo period. It is associated with Suruga Province in modern-day Shizuoka Prefecture.

In the han system, Sunpu was a political and economic abstraction based on periodic cadastral surveys and projected agricultural yields. In other words, the domain was defined in terms of kokudaka, not land area. This was different than the feudalism of the West.

Famous quotes containing the word domain:

The vice named surrealism is the immoderate and impassioned use of the stupefacient image or rather of the uncontrolled provocation of the image for its own sake and for the element of unpredictable perturbation and of metamorphosis which it introduces into the domain of representation; for each image on each occasion forces you to revise the entire Universe.
    Louis Aragon (1897–1982)
