Planned Bridge
In the 1960s proposals were made for a bridge across the Sunda Strait and in the 1990s further suggestions arose. A new plan was announced in October 2007 which would entail utilising the islands of Ular, Sangiang and Prajurit to create a four-part suspension bridge reaching 70 metres (230 ft) above sea level with a maximum span of 3 kilometers, nearly 50% longer than the current record holder, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. Construction may begin in 2014 if funding, estimated to be at least US$10 billion, can be secured.
An accord was signed in April 2012 with the China Railway Construction Corp for a $11bn road and double track rail bridge.

Famous quotes containing the words planned and/or bridge:
“If little planned is little sinned
But little need the grave distress.
Whats dying but a second wind?
How but in zig-zag wantonness
Could trumpeter Michael be so brave?”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
“I was at work that morning. Someone came riding like mad
Over the bridge and up the roadFarmer Roufs little lad.
Bareback he rode; he had no hat; he hardly stopped to say,
Morgans men are coming, Frau, theyre galloping on this way.”
—Constance Fenimore Woolson (18401894)
