Summer Archbishop's Palace

The Summer Archbishop's Palace or Summer Archiepiscopal Palace (Slovak: Letný arcibiskupský palác, Hungarian: érseki nyári palota) is a palace in Bratislava which houses the government of Slovakia (the Slovak Republic Government Office). The restored palace with its English garden is inaccessible to the public.

The palace was originally in the 17th century a Renaissance summer seat for the archbishops of Esztergom (since Esztergom had been occupied by the Ottoman Empire in 1543, the archbishops were based in Bratislava). The baroque sculptor Georg Rafael Donner had a studio in the palace garden for almost 10 years.

Famous quotes containing the words summer, archbishop and/or palace:

    The awful shadow of some unseen Power
    Floats though unseen among us, visiting
    This various world with as inconstant wing
    As summer winds that creep from flower to flower;
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

    The archbishop is away. The church is gray.
    He has left his robes folded in camphor
    And, dressed in black, he walks
    Among fireflies.

    While the hollow oak our palace is,
    Our heritage the sea.
