Sulzberger Bay - Iceberg Formation

Iceberg Formation

The ice shelf released icebergs some days after March 12, 2011, within a day of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Scientists have linked the ice calving to the tsunami reaching the ice shelf, some 13,600 kilometers (8,500 mi) away from the earthquake epicenter. The main iceberg was approximately the area of Manhattan Island. In total, the icebergs calved from the ice shelf totalled an area of nearly 125 km2 (48 mi2). This section of the shelf had not moved since 1946.

Famous quotes containing the words iceberg and/or formation:

    As the shade went up
And the ambulance came crashing through the dust
Of the new day, the moon and the sun and the stars,
    And the iceberg slowly sank
In the volcano and the sea ran far away
Yellow over the hot sand, green as the green trees.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

The formation of an oppositional world view is necessary for feminist struggle. This means that the world we have most intimately known, the world in which we feel “safe” ... must be radically changed. Perhaps it is the knowledge that everyone must change, not just those we label enemies or oppressors, that has so far served to check our revolutionary impulses.
    Bell (c. 1955)
