These incidents were the inspiration behind an episode of Law & Order: SVU featuring Robin Williams as the hoaxer, who identified himself as "detective Milgram", a reference to the famous Milgram experiment that tested obedience to authority. The incidents also inspired the short film Plainview, which played the festival circuit in 2007/2008, and the 2012 film by Craig Zobel titled Compliance, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
