Streets in Gibraltar - Winston Churchill Avenue

Winston Churchill Avenue

Winston Churchill Avenue is a northern 1.5 km arterial road which is the only road in and out of the territory, connecting it with Spain. Once the customs are crossed, the avenue becomes the dual carriageway (Spanish: AutovĂa) CA-34 (former national road N-351). The road intersects the runway of the Gibraltar Airport; movable barricades close when aircraft land or take off. In 2009, the Government of Gibraltar announced that a new highway will be built in order to avoid the crossing of the airport runway. The new road, a dual carriageway, will link the customs checkpoint with Devil's Tower Road, crossing the airport runway underground, through a 350-metre tunnel.

Famous quotes containing the words winston churchill, churchill and/or avenue:

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.
    Winston Churchill (1874–1965)

Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a corpse.
    —Winston Churchill (1874–1965)

    Along the avenue of cypresses,
All in their scarlet cloaks and surplices
Of linen, go the chanting choristers,
The priests in gold and black, the villagers. . . .
