A protest against Aswad's killing in Arbil attracted hundreds of Kurds who called for an end to honor killings.

It is believed Aswad's murder sparked a reprisal attack in 23 April in Mosul claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq, in which 23 Yazidis were killed. The same day also witnessed another reprisal attack claimed by Ansar al-Sunna by a suicide carbomb attack targeted the village of Tel Isqof killing 25 Yazidis and Assyrian Christians. Both her murder and the reprisal were condemned by Amnesty International and by the Kurdistan Regional Government which asked the federal government to investigate. Authorities in Northern Iraq have arrested four people in connection with the killing.

The devastating terrorist attacks on the Yazidi towns Kahtaniya and Jazeera in August 2007, carried out by Sunni Muslim extremists and killing almost 800 civilians are said to have been claimed by the killers to be a response to the stoning.

Famous quotes containing the words response and/or retaliation:

... the most extreme conditions require the most extreme response, and for some individuals, the call to that response is vitality itself.... The integrity and self-esteem gained from winning the battle against extremity are the richest treasures in my life.
    Diana Nyad (b. 1949)

The retaliation is apt to be in monstrous disproportion to the supposed offense; for when in anybody was revenge in its exactions aught else but an inordinate usurer?
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
