The WELL
In 1985, Brand and Larry Brilliant founded The WELL ("Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link"), a prototypical, wide-ranging online community for intelligent, informed participants the world over. The WELL won the 1990 Best Online Publication Award from the Computer Press Association. Almost certainly the ideas behind the WELL were greatly inspired by Douglas Engelbart's work at SRI International; Brand was acknowledged by Engelbart in "The Mother of All Demos" in 1968 when the computer mouse and video conferencing were introduced.

Famous quotes containing the words the well, the and/or well:
“At the last, tenderly,
From the walls of the powerful fortressd house,
From the clasp of the knitted locks, from the keep of the well-closed doors,
Let me be wafted.
Let me glide noiselessly forth;
With the key of softness unlock the lockswith a whisper,
Set ope the doors O soul.”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
“I speak truth, not my belly-full, but as much as I dare; and I dare the more the more I grow into years.”
—Michel de Montaigne (15331592)
“Thou camst out of thy mothers belly without government, thou hast livd hitherto without government, and thou mayst be carried to thy long home without government, when it shall please the Lord. How many people in this world live without government, yet do well enough, and are well lookd upon?”
—Miguel De Cervantes (15471616)
