History
Bonspille was one of the key figures in a power struggle in the early 2000s in the community. He and three other chiefs at the time, Crawford Gabriel, Pearl Bonspille and John (sha ko hen the tha) Harding opposed then-Grand Chief James Gabriel (1993-2004). Among the issues, they were concerned about Gabriel's having hired private police forces for a raid in the community in January 2004.
In 2005 Bonspille defeated Gabriel in the election for grand chief. In this election Harding and Pearl Bonspille lost their seats on the band council, and most of the six members were supporters of Gabriel. After finishing his term in 2008, Bonspille moved with his family to adjacent Oka, Quebec.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Classes struggle, some classes triumph, others are eliminated. Such is history; such is the history of civilization for thousands of years.”
—Mao Zedong (18931976)
“The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more”
—John Adams (17351826)
“You that would judge me do not judge alone
This book or that, come to this hallowed place
Where my friends portraits hang and look thereon;
Irelands history in their lineaments trace;
Think where mans glory most begins and ends
And say my glory was I had such friends.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
