Steel Winds - Project History

Project History

The turbine components were manufactured in 2006 at Clipper's facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, shipped overland at high cost to the project site in early 2007, constructed, and placed on-line in April 2007. This makes it the first commercial deployment of their 2.5-MW Liberty Series turbines. June 5, 2007 marked the start of full commercial operations.

Norman Polanski, former mayor of Lackawanna, NY, was a supporter of the project, using it as part of his re-election campaign. It is hoped to have a positive effect on tourism and attract industry to the area, as well as the possibility of manufacturing turbine equipment locally to reduce costs for future projects.

The second phase of the project became active on February 21, 2012. Steel Winds II completes the 14-turbine project, providing a cumulative 35 megawatts of power.

Famous quotes containing the words project and/or history:

Music is so much a part of their daily lives that if an Indian visits another reservation one of the first questions asked on his return is: “What new songs did you learn?”
—Federal Writers’ Project Of The Wor, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

We don’t know when our name came into being or how some distant ancestor acquired it. We don’t understand our name at all, we don’t know its history and yet we bear it with exalted fidelity, we merge with it, we like it, we are ridiculously proud of it as if we had thought it up ourselves in a moment of brilliant inspiration.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)
