Stair Hole is a cove that is forming just to the west of Lulworth Cove in Dorset, southern England. In a few hundred thousand years it may be as large as nearby Lulworth Cove. The folded limestone strata known as the Lulworth crumple are particularly visible at Stair Hole. There are several caves visible from the seaward side of Stair Hole; Cathedral Cavern is supported by pillars of rock rising out of the water. It was created by an earthquake which pushed the rocks upwards creating the slanting effect.
Stair hole featured in the Play for Today Nuts in May, directed by Mike Leigh.
Famous quotes containing the words stair and/or hole:
“Provence,
The Renascence, the age of Pericles, each
A broad, rich-carpeted stair to pride
With manhood now the cost theyre easy to follow
For the ways taken are all notorious,
Lettered, sculptured, and rhymed....”
—Allen Tate (18991979)
“I used to say: there is a God-shaped hole in me. For a long time I stressed the absence, the hole. Now I find it is the shape which has become more important.”
