Football
The Italian National Football team rarely plays at the stadium. On December 4, 1982 they tied Romania, 0-0, in a qualifying match for Euro 1984. The national team played only one game there between 1982 and 2006; they won a friendly against Mexico, 2-0, on January 20, 1993. On March 1, 2006, they played a friendly against Germany and won 4-1. In May 2008 they played a friendly against Belgium and won 3-1. On September 7, 2010, they defeated the Faroe Islands 5-0 in a Euro 2012 qualifying match, where Fabio Quagliarella was booed when he scored because Quagliarella plays for Juventus, the rival of Fiorentina.

“People stress the violence. Thats the smallest part of it. Football is brutal only from a distance. In the middle of it theres a calm, a tranquility. The players accept pain. Theres a sense of order even at the end of a running play with bodies stewn everywhere. When the systems interlock, theres a satisfaction to the game that cant be duplicated. Theres a harmony.”
—Don Delillo (b. 1926)
