St. Mary's School Yala

St. Mary’s School Yala is a provincial school for boys situated along the Kisumu-Busia highway in Yala Township in the Nyanza Province of Western Kenya.

The school was founded in 1927 by the Mill Hill missionaries notably Msgr. Brandsma who wanted to start a teachers college for catholic schools. Yala School was opened in 1927 making it one of the oldest schools in Kenya.

It was noted that not many students were keen on becoming teachers and so it become a full primary school and junior secondary school that expanded to become the current St. Mary’s Yala. 700-730 students attend the school each year and it has a teaching staff of 40.

Famous quotes containing the words mary and/or school:

France, indeed! whose Catholic millions still worship Mary Queen of Heaven; and for ten generations refused cap and knee to many angel Maries, rightful Queens of France.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

After school days are over, the girls ... find no natural connection between their school life and the new one on which they enter, and are apt to be aimless, if not listless, needing external stimulus, and finding it only prepared for them, it may be, in some form of social excitement. ...girls after leaving school need intellectual interests, well regulated and not encroaching on home duties.
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)
