Recent Developments
On the morning of 1 March 2013 following Whole School Mass, the Archbishop of Johannesburg, Buti Tlhagale OMI, presided over the opening and dedication of the Brother Anthony Wing at St David's in front of the whole school, invited guests and dignitaries.
The development of the Br Anthony Wing started as a concept approximately four years ago, initially-comprising six classrooms to answer the need for more teaching venues in the High School. A team of staff set to work considering the educational opportunities which a new development could offer. Firstly, how best could the space available be used, secondly, how to enhance innovative teaching methodologies which require more flexible learning areas. Discussions included big group / small group learning, problem-solving and project based learning and the effective use of technology as an educational tool.
Whilst education normally centres on relationships between pupils and teachers, these new facilities hope to provide the capacity for this relationship to be explored more fully. The entire campus is now linked via wireless network and the school will be able to maximise the benefits of technology in classrooms. There is an Open Plan Learning Area which is being used for an iPad Pilot Project being run in Grade 8, with the Maths Department present in the ground and first floors.
It is felt that naming the block after Br Anthony Doherty is a fitting tribute to the man who dedicated his life to the service of God and to the upliftment of others, and hopefully this will serve as inspiration to the St David's pupils who are privileged enough to use this space and be part of the St David's legacy.
