American Football
The Bay Area is home to two National Football League teams, the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, who play at Candlestick Park and O.co Coliseum, respectively. However, the 49ers expect to move into a new stadium in Santa Clara by 2014, though some believe that the Raiders could also move into the stadium. The 49ers have won five Super Bowls (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXIX), while the Raiders have won three (XI, XV, XVIII), while having lost two (II, XXXVII)
The Bay Area had a United Football League team in 2009 named the California Redwoods, who played at AT&T Park and Spartan Stadium, though the Redwoods would move to Sacramento in 2010.
From 1995-2008, as well as since 2011, the Bay had the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League, who currently play at the HP Pavilion at San Jose. The SaberCats have won 3 ArenaBowls (XVI, XVIII, XXI), and have lost in another (XXII).

Famous quotes containing the words american and/or football:
“The star is the ultimate American verification of Jean Jacques Rousseaus Emile. His mere existence proves the perfectability of any man or woman. Oh wonderful pliability of human nature, in a society where anyone can become a celebrity! And where any celebrity ... may become a star!”
—Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)
“People stress the violence. Thats the smallest part of it. Football is brutal only from a distance. In the middle of it theres a calm, a tranquility. The players accept pain. Theres a sense of order even at the end of a running play with bodies stewn everywhere. When the systems interlock, theres a satisfaction to the game that cant be duplicated. Theres a harmony.”
—Don Delillo (b. 1926)
