Sport in The Australian Capital Territory - Rugby Union

Rugby Union

The Brumbies are Canberra's Super Rugby team, founded in 1996. Their home ground is Canberra Stadium. They have won the competition twice, first in 2001 and then 2004 making them the most successful Australian franchise in Super Rugby history despite their relatively small population and player base.

Rugby union at a junior level is very strong in the ACT. The sport is played in clubs and some schools also take part in the junior leagues. A major rivalry is between St Edmund's and Marist, in 2009 a brawl between the two teams occurred in the under 18s division one final which saw the game called off during the second half. Rugby union clubs include Easts, Gungahlin Eagles, Queanbeyan Whites, Canberra Royals, Tuggeranong Vikings, Uni-Norths Owls and Wests Lions and school teams include St Edmund's, Marist, Canberra Grammar School and Daramalan College.

Famous quotes containing the word union:

Every good cause gained a victory when the Union troops were triumphant. Our final victory was the triumph of religion, of virtue, of knowledge.... During those four years, whatever our motives, whatever our lives, we were fighting on God’s side. We were doing His work. What would this country have been if we had failed?
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
