Rugby Union Football

Rugby union has a long history in New South Wales dating back to 1869. However it lags in popularity behind rugby league.

Sydney has a local club rugby union competition (the Shute Shield), and a Super Rugby team the NSW Waratahs, who play their games in the city and represent the entire state of New South Wales. They were represented in the defunct Australian Rugby Championship by Sydney Fleet, Western Sydney Rams and Central Coast Rays. The southern part of the state is represented by the Australian Capital Territory-based Brumbies in Super Rugby; the Canberra Vikings were the region's Australian Rugby Championship representative. Rugby union is regarded as an upper class game and is played in many of Sydney's top private schools. The Australian Rugby Union headquarters are located in Sydney. The Waratahs play out of the Sydney Football Stadium, and when in Sydney the Wallabies play out of ANZ Stadium.

Famous quotes containing the words union and/or football:

Every good cause gained a victory when the Union troops were triumphant. Our final victory was the triumph of religion, of virtue, of knowledge.... During those four years, whatever our motives, whatever our lives, we were fighting on God’s side. We were doing His work. What would this country have been if we had failed?
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

You can’t be a Real Country unless you have A BEER and an airline—it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a BEER.
    Frank Zappa (1940–1993)
