Online Journalism Pioneer
Spiegel Online first went up on 25 October 1994, making it the first online presence of an established news magazine, one day before the Time site. SPON started as a service on Compuserve. The web domain www.spiegel.de was established one year later. SPON's content initially consisted of hand-picked articles from the print magazine. As early as 1995, however, original content first appeared in a section called "Scanner," which was only available online. In the following year, Spiegel Online was relaunched and commenced featuring breaking news as well.

Famous quotes containing the words journalism and/or pioneer:
“In journalism it is simpler to sound off than it is to find out. It is more elegant to pontificate than it is to sweat.”
—Harold Evans (b. 1928)
“Mead had studied for the ministry, but had lost his faith and took great delight in blasphemy. Capt. Charles H. Frady, pioneer missionary, held a meeting here and brought Mead back into the fold. He then became so devout that, one Sunday, when he happened upon a swimming party, he shot at the people in the river, and threatened to kill anyone he again caught desecrating the Sabbath.”
—For the State of Nebraska, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
