Sperm Washing - Decreased HIV Transmission

Decreased HIV Transmission

It can be used to decrease the risk of HIV transmission in HIV-positive fathers, because the HIV infection is carried by the seminal fluid rather than the sperm. One Italian study from 2005 of 567 serodiscordant couples treated with sperm washing resulted in no horizontal (to the woman) or vertical (to the child) HIV seroconversion. However, there is no 100% guarantee that washed sperm is free from virus.

Famous quotes containing the word decreased:

In 1600 the specialization of games and pastimes did not extend beyond infancy; after the age of three or four it decreased and disappeared. From then on the child played the same games as the adult, either with other children or with adults. . . . Conversely, adults used to play games which today only children play.
