The Special Commitment Center in the state of Washington is a post-sentence treatment institution for Sexually Violent Predators, located on McNeil Island. It is controversial in that it allows the involuntary commitment of sex offenders who have served their prison sentence. However, as in other psychiatric institutions across the country, civil commitment is based on dangerousness related to a mental abnormality. The center works towards treating the offender then releasing them under supervision back to the community.
